Lā hainā means "cruel sun" in the Hawaiian language.
Devastation in Paradise.
On August 8th, Maui suffered the largest and deadliest US wildfire of the century. Nearly 3,000 homes and local businesses were destroyed, leaving over 6,800 people displaced and homeless. 2,170 acres were burned in the Lahaina, Kula and Kihei fires, causing over 6 billion dollars in damage. Local residents who lost their homes are currently receiving financial aid for temporary housing in hotels and air bnbs in West Maui, while others are staying with Ohana. But that government assistance will eventually run out.
In early October, I visited Maui to try and understand what they are going through, and how we can offer help from the mainland. Maui Nui Strong is the best resource to choose how and where to Make Donations. There are also great ways to Volunteer if you are planning a trip to Maui. By respectfully visiting, you are directly helping the local businesses get back on their feet again to economic recovery.
During my visit, I was able to take pictures and reflect on the natural sacred beauty, while simultaneously mourn the death and devastation it had endured just weeks before. I spent time volunteering at one of the distribution warehouses, where impacted families were given food, water, toiletries, medicine and essential supplies. My experience was both meaningful and heartbreaking, and I hope to raise much needed funds for the Survivors. All proceeds from my Maui Postcards will be donated directly to the Maui Nui Strong foundation. Mahalo for your generous support and Aloha Spirit. 🌺
